Prayer Tag - WHAT?
I was placing an order online the other day for some
advertising materials for our business. Call it
inspiration -- heck, call it whatever you want! -- but I
began ordering 6” X 4” magnets to randomly put on vehicles
in the area where we live. They said something to the
effect of “I SAID A PRAYER FOR YOU TODAY,” and I
encouraged the recipient to do the same for someone else.
I know how much it meant to us to know that others were
saying prayers for us when we needed it most, and I
thought that, perhaps, the person receiving my magnet
might NEED to know that someone said a prayer for them.
I called my husband over and showed him what I was doing.
Suddenly, my idea of praying for 10 random people exploded
into Prayer Tag! The more we talked about it, the more
excited we became. It’s more than a random act of kindness
-- which we love to do, by the way! Prayer Tag touches on
a person’s spirituality, and I think that’s really
important.
My first instinct is to refer to Prayer Tag as a game, but
I don't want it to be treated simply as a game.
There are rules, but they're very basic. If you
would like to be a part of the Prayer Tag movement --
yeah, I think I like that better than "game" since
"movement" implies that it doesn't have an ending --
simply send a self-addressed stamped envelope (with TWO
stamps, please! It's also known as a SASE for those of you
who are old enough to remember ZOOM on PBS!) to:
Prayer Tag
754 Michael Drive
Winder, GA 30680
I will send you 9 business-sized cards (top picture) and 1
business-sized magnet (bottom picture) to place randomly
for someone to find. Please remember to say a prayer
for the person you're leaving it for, or this whole
project is worthless!
Our family attends church regularly, but I am
intentionally keeping this website non-denominational.
After much discussion, my husband and I decided that if we
received a magnet or a card on OUR car saying that someone
had said a prayer for us, it would mean just as much to us
if that person had prayed to Jesus, Allah, Buddha, the
Universe, or someone else! Prayer is non-denominational.
It’s about loving your fellow human beings enough to wish
good things for them. That’s my opinion, anyway.

Prayer Tag - WHY?
Our family has been through quite a bit in that past
several years. During the summer of 2001, our company was
sued, I gave birth to my son, we sold our house in
Florida, and bought a house in North Carolina -- all
within six weeks or so! Overnight, our income was cut to
zero, and our family of five was in dire straits. I think
it’s around that time that we truly learned of the power
of prayer, which obviously worked because every time we
needed money, we somehow found a few dollars.
In the summer of 2006, our family was challenged again
when our six-year old son was hospitalized with kidney
failure due to E. coli poisoning. He had a 15% chance of
not surviving. I’m positive that July had more than 31
days that year because his hospitalization seemed endless.
Every few days, I kept everyone (family, friends, church
members…) updated as to his condition and asked for their
prayers. Though he exited the hospital a much different
little boy, -- physically, emotionally, and mentally -- he
did come home to us. At this point, medical experts
believe that he has less than a 5% chance of complications
down the road. We sincerely believe that he’s a walking
miracle.
Simply put, prayer works.

Prayer Tag - HOW?
I’ll use this section for a Prayer 101 class.
I learned that the words did not mean as much as the
sentiment when my youngest son began asking to say the
blessing at dinner. Our normal, “Thank you for this food,
etc.” became, “Thank you for forks, thank you for napkins,
thank you for clocks, thank you for sinks…” -- whatever he
happened to look around and see. The cool part was that we
knew that he was genuinely thankful for those things and
it didn’t matter if he left out the part of being thankful
for our meal. If a prayer comes from your heart, that’s
all that matters.
If you’re totally stumped, I graciously allow you to use
the following:
“Dear [fill in the name of whomever you pray to], please
keep [this person] safe today and always. Let them find
comfort if they’re hurt or sad. Help them to make good
choices and to be a good person. Please let them see the
benefit of prayer and continue the message of Prayer Tag.”

Prayer Tag - WHEN?
I truly believe that we should pray all the time. If
that’s not your style, I totally understand! I used to
feel very awkward praying, especially out loud. I always
thought people would think I was weird, and I didn’t
really know what to say. (As if there was a RIGHT way to
pray!) If you decide to be part of Prayer Tag, say a short
prayer -- it doesn’t have to be anything fancy -- for the
person for whom you are leaving a Prayer Tag card or
magnet. Say it aloud, say it silently to yourself… it
doesn’t matter. The important part is that you pray for
good things for that person.

Prayer Tag - WHERE?
This is the easy one. EVERYWHERE. You don’t need to be in
a place of worship to say prayers. Our family says them
all the time… in restaurants, at the airport (safe
travel!), at home, and yes, in church. We don't save them
all up to use on Sundays, though. We pray every day. And
now with Prayer Tag, we can add “in parking lots” to our
list of locations.

|
Prayer Tag - WHO?
YOU. You have the power right now to pray for yourself, a
friend, a family member, or even someone you don't know.
Ask for help if you need it or pray for forgiveness; offer
thanks if you've been blessed! You don't need Prayer Tag
to help you pray. You only need yourself, your
spirituality, and whatever is in your heart.
